Do you feel your life is too busy? You are a successful professional and you work hard so your colleagues can count on you. Why do you always feel like there is never enough time to do the most important things? You do your best to be a great parent, but you feel like you’re always in a rush. The truth is we all have the same amount of time every day, every week. So how do some people appear to have plenty of time to run a successful business, coach the basketball team and volunteer at school?
I’m lucky because I learned the secret to time management when I was in my mid 20’s. I was single with no kids but I still struggled to get my work done timely. I was working a lot of hours and feeling disorganized. So I signed up for an all-day class “The Secret to Time Managment” The first thing the instructor told us was there is no magic bullet or secret formula to time management. So I got up and walked out, I didn’t have time for this guy. JK, I was way too shy to do that and the instructor said that he would give us some strategies to help.
Know your priorities
Three Keys to managing your time
- Live by the calendar. You need to block time on your calendar and then let it be your guide and don’t over think it.
- Make a weekly appointment with yourself to plan your next week. There is no shortcut to taking the time to plan.
- As you find wins in your system document the steps. You will begin to find a routine that works well for you and when you do write it down. Keep it simple, but make sure you write it down.
Did you find the answer?
You have to make time for your priorities. Do you know what is most important to you? Give yourself permission to go to lunch at the kids school, volunteer on that committee or take care of yourself by going to the gym. First put the important things on your calendar then you will feel better about what you accomplish even if your to-do list is longer at the end of the day. Remember there is no magic bullet you have to work to create new habits. And the new habits that will work for you to create the time you need to improve your life.
